Nainital Zoo (High Altitude Zoo): A Home for Himalayan Wildlife
The Nainital Zoo, officially known as Bharat Ratna Pt. Govind Ballabh Pant High Altitude Zoo, stands as a testament to wildlife conservation in the Kumaon region. Located at an altitude of 2,100 meters (6,900 feet) above sea level on the Sher Ka Danda hill, it is one of the few high-altitude zoos in India. The zoo plays a crucial role in preserving several endangered species native to the Himalayan region and promoting environmental awareness.
A Glimpse into Himalayan Biodiversity
Despite its relatively compact size, the Nainital Zoo houses a remarkable collection of animals and birds. It’s a treat for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers, offering a rare opportunity to observe species that are often difficult to spot in the wild. Key attractions include:
- Mammals: The star attractions often include the majestic Snow Leopard, the elusive Siberian Tiger, the spirited Himalayan Bear, various species of deer (like Barking Deer and Sambar), civet cats, and the playful Hill Fox.
- Birds: A diverse collection of high-altitude birds, including various pheasants (like Kalij Pheasant and Lady Amherst’s Pheasant), parakeets, and unique Himalayan species.
- Reptiles: While less prominent, some local reptile species are also housed here.
Conservation and Education
Beyond being a tourist attraction, Nainital Zoo is actively involved in breeding programs for endangered species and serves as an important educational center. It aims to instill a sense of responsibility towards wildlife and their habitats among visitors, especially children. The animals are kept in spacious enclosures designed to mimic their natural environment as much as possible, prioritizing their well-being.

The slightly challenging uphill terrain adds to the experience, offering glimpses of Nainital town from different vantage points. It’s an ideal spot for a leisurely visit, combining recreation with learning about the rich biodiversity of the Himalayan region. The cool climate at this altitude makes for a comfortable viewing experience, even during warmer months.
